Pre-made vs custom ping pong paddle: which is worth it?

Updated on · 4 min read

A pre-made paddle comes with the rubbers already glued and is the best way to start. A custom paddle is built from parts (one blade and two rubbers) and pays off once you know what you want, because you can replace just the rubber and tune the paddle to your style.

Shopping for a table tennis paddle, you quickly hit two options: a pre-made paddle sold as one piece, or a custom paddle where you buy the blade and rubbers separately. Both can play well. The difference is how much control you want over your gear and how much you play.

The difference in one sentence

A pre-made paddle (or pre-assembled paddle) leaves the factory with rubbers glued on. A custom ping pong paddle is one where you pick every part: one blade and two rubbers, which can differ on each side.

When a pre-made paddle makes sense

  • You are new and do not know your style yet.
  • You play for fun, at home or at a club, without competing.
  • You want a spare paddle or extras for friends.

A good pre-made control paddle is plenty for a first year of practice. What matters is that the rubber has real grip. See what to look for in the best paddle for beginners.

When a custom paddle makes sense

  • You practice every week and your strokes are consistent.
  • You want different rubbers on each side, for example a faster forehand rubber and a softer backhand rubber.
  • You want to play sanctioned tournaments, which require ITTF-approved rubber.
  • Your rubber wore out and you do not want to replace the blade, which lasts for years.

That last point adds up over time. A well-kept blade can last many years. Rubbers get replaced when they lose grip. On most pre-made paddles, the rubber is glued in a way that makes replacing it not worth the effort.

How to build a custom ping pong paddle

It is easier than it sounds:

  1. Pick a blade for your style: control (ALL), attack (OFF) or defense (DEF).
  2. Pick two rubbers and the sponge thickness for each side.
  3. Choose colors: one side must be black and the other an approved bright color such as red or blue.
  4. Glue the rubbers on with a water-based table tennis glue.
  5. Trim the excess flush with the blade and add edge tape if you like.

How to match blade and rubber

Rule of thumb: final speed is the sum of both parts. A fast blade with fast rubber and a thick sponge makes a very fast paddle. To balance it:

If the blade isPair it with
Slow (ALL, 5-ply)Medium to fast rubber, 1.8 to 2.0 mm sponge
Medium (OFF-)Medium rubber, 1.8 to 2.0 mm sponge
Fast (OFF, OFF+, carbon)Control or medium rubber, 1.8 to 2.0 mm sponge, if you still want control

Are there "pro" pre-made paddles?

There are higher-end pre-made paddles with better rubber. They can be a nice bridge between a beginner paddle and a custom one. Still, competitive players almost always use custom paddles because they want to pick every part and change rubbers often.

Frequently asked questions

Pre-made or custom: which is better for beginners?

Pre-made, as long as it is a good-quality control paddle. It costs less and is ready to play.

Is a custom ping pong paddle faster?

Not necessarily. It is more customizable. You can build a slow control paddle if you want.

Can I replace the rubber on a pre-made paddle?

Sometimes, but it is often not worth it because pre-made blades tend to be basic. Moving to a custom paddle usually makes more sense.

Do I need a custom paddle for tournaments?

You need ITTF-approved rubber and one black side. Many basic pre-made paddles lack approved rubber, so a custom paddle is the usual route.

How long does it take to build a custom paddle?

With water-based glue, about half an hour, mostly waiting for the glue to dry. Once glued and trimmed, the paddle is ready to use.
