WTT Grand Smash explained
A Grand Smash is the top level of the WTT professional tour, the table tennis version of a tennis Grand Slam. Each Smash runs about ten days, has a 64-player singles main draw and gives the singles champion 2,000 world ranking points. In 2026 there were four: Singapore, the United States, Europe (Malmö) and China.

When a commentator says a match is "for a Grand Smash title", it means the top step of professional table tennis. The WTT Grand Smashes are the flagship events of World Table Tennis and bring together nearly the entire world elite, the way the Grand Slams do in tennis.
Here is what a Grand Smash is, where they are played, how the format works and why winning one is a career-defining result.
What is a Grand Smash in table tennis?
The Grand Smash is the highest tier of the WTT tour. The first one was the Singapore Smash in 2022, and the calendar has grown since. Each Smash has fixed dates, big draws, the largest prize money on the tour and the same ranking points as the World Championships and the Olympics.
That is why fans call them the "Grand Slams of ping pong". The comparison works: there are only a few a year, every top player shows up and a title stays on a résumé forever.
Where are the Grand Smashes held?
The number of Smashes and the host cities depend on WTT's deals with each country. Up to 2026, these were the events:
| Grand Smash | First held | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore Smash | 2022 | The original, in Singapore |
| China Smash | 2024 | Played in Beijing |
| Saudi Smash | 2024 | One edition, in Jeddah |
| United States Smash | 2025 | Las Vegas in 2025; Los Angeles area in 2026 |
| Europe Smash | 2025 | In Malmö, Sweden |
The 2026 calendar had four Smashes spread across the year:
The 2026 United States Smash was played in Ontario, California, in the Los Angeles area, the region that will host table tennis at LA 2028. For American fans, it was a rare chance to watch the world's best in person.
How the format works
A Grand Smash lasts about ten days including qualifying, and it has all five pro events:
- men's and women's singles, each with a 64-player main draw;
- men's and women's doubles;
- mixed doubles.
The highest-ranked players go straight into the main draw. Others play qualifying, and the host nation gets a few wild cards. Doubles matches are best of 5 games, and the late singles rounds are best of 7. Everything follows the official table tennis rules, with games to 11.
What a Grand Smash is worth
| What's at stake | Grand Smash |
|---|---|
| Points for the singles champion | 2,000 |
| Compared with | Same as the Worlds and the Olympics |
| Singles main draw | 64 players |
| Length | About 10 days |
Those 2,000 points are why no top player skips a Smash. The world ranking counts the best results over 12 months, so one good or bad Smash can move a player several spots. The prize money is also the biggest on tour and a big part of how much table tennis players earn.
A historic Smash for the Americas
The biggest Grand Smash moment for the Americas came in February 2026 in Singapore. Brazil's Hugo Calderano and Bruna Takahashi won the mixed doubles, beating South Korea's Lim Jonghoon and Shin Yubin 3-0 in the final. They became the first pair from outside Asia to win that event.
In singles, Calderano has been a regular in the late rounds of Smashes since breaking into the world top 10. His story is in Hugo Calderano.
Grand Smash vs WTT Finals vs World Championships
They get mixed up because the same players appear in all three:
- Grand Smash: an open WTT tour event with big draws, qualifying and five events.
- WTT Finals: the season finale for only the top 16 in each draw. See WTT Finals.
- World Championships: an ITTF event where players represent their countries. See World Table Tennis Championships.
