The World Table Tennis Championships are the oldest and one of the most prestigious events in the sport. They date back to 1926, older than soccer's World Cup, and almost every big chapter of table tennis history played out there, from the Hungarian era to China's long run at the top.

Here is how the Worlds work today, which events are played and where the next editions will be.

When did the World Championships start?

The first World Championships were held in London in December 1926, the same year the ITTF was founded. Early editions were mostly European, led by Hungary. Hungary's Viktor Barna holds the record for the most world titles across singles, doubles, mixed and team events.

The Worlds were yearly at first and became every two years from 1957, with all events together. In 1999 and 2000 the individual and team events were split for the first time, they were combined again in 2001, and since 2003 each format has its own year.

The US has its own place in that history: Ruth Aarons won the women's singles in 1936 and is still the only American world singles champion.

Individual vs team championships

There is now one World Championships every year, alternating:

The team championships, with the Swaythling Cup and Corbillon Cup, have their own page: World Team Championships.

The trophies

Each individual event has a historic trophy:

Mixed doublesHeydusek Prize

How the format works

The individual Worlds are a single-elimination event: lose once and you are out. In Doha 2025, the singles draws started at the round of 128, and matches were best of 7 games to 11 points, as in the official table tennis scoring rules.

Entries come from the world ranking and continental pathways set by the ITTF, with a cap on players per country. There is no bronze medal match: both losing semifinalists get bronze.

A world singles title is worth 2,000 points in the world ranking, the same as a Grand Smash or the Olympics. For many players, though, the history matters more: the winner joins a list that includes Barna, Ogimura, Waldner and Ma Long.

Doha 2025

The 2025 individual Worlds were held in Doha, Qatar, in May. Wang Chuqin won the men's singles and Sun Yingsha the women's singles, keeping China on top.

The story of the tournament was Brazil's Hugo Calderano, who reached the men's singles final and took silver, the first man from outside Asia and Europe to make that final. His career is in Hugo Calderano.

Rio 2029, awarded by the ITTF in 2025, will be the first World Championships in South America. The 2026 team event in London marked 100 years since the first Worlds in the same city.

Who dominates the Worlds?

Hungary in the early decades, Japan in the 1950s and China since the 1960s, with by far the most medals in the all-time table. Jan-Ove Waldner's Sweden was the main exception from the late 1980s through the 1990s. The reasons behind China's run are in why China dominates table tennis.
