Ping pong net: height, types and setup
The official ping pong net is 6 in (15.25 cm) high along its whole length, and the posts sit 6 in outside each sideline, so the net is about 6 ft (1.83 m) end to end. The common clamp types are screw clamps (the firmest), spring clips (quick on and off) and retractable nets (portable and fit many tables).
In this article
The net looks like the simplest part of the table, but it changes the whole game. A low net makes attacking too easy; a slack net that sags in the middle lets balls through that should have clipped the tape. That is why the rules are precise about it.
Here you will find the official ping pong net height, the clamp types, how to set it up, and what the rules say when the ball or a player touches the net.
Official net dimensions
| Item | Regulation size |
|---|---|
| Net height | 6 in (15.25 cm) above the table, along the whole length |
| Post height | 6 in (15.25 cm) |
| Posts outside the sideline | 6 in (15.25 cm) on each side |
| Total length | about 6 ft (1.83 m) |
| Bottom of the net | as close to the table as possible |
Under the rules, the net assembly includes the net, its cord, the posts and the clamps that attach them to the table. The rest of the table's dimensions are in table tennis table dimensions.
Types of ping pong net
Screw clamp
The post grips the table edge with a clamp tightened by a screw. It is the firmest type and the one most clubs use. The downside is that it takes longer to put on and take off.
Spring clip
The clamp works like a clothespin: squeeze, slip it on the edge and let go. It is handy if you take the net off every time you fold the table. Weak springs, though, let the net slide during play.
Retractable net
The net rolls up inside a small case on one post. You clamp one side, pull the net across and clamp the other. It is portable and adjusts to tables of different widths, which is why it is the choice for improvised tables, like a dining table. It is generally less firm than a screw clamp, and the height can vary.
| Type | Firmness | Convenience | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screw clamp | High | Medium | A home or club table that stays put |
| Spring clip | Medium | High | Tables that get folded often |
| Retractable | Medium to low | Very high | Travel, dining tables, tables of different widths |
How to set up a ping pong net
- Find the middle of the table, where the two halves meet, and clamp one post on each side, lined up with that seam.
- Tighten the clamps firmly, but not so hard that they dent the edge.
- Run the cord through the top of the net and fasten it to both posts.
- Adjust the tension until the net is 6 in high in the middle too, not just at the ends.
- Check that the bottom of the net sits close to the surface and that the ends are attached to the posts from top to bottom.
Measuring tip: use a ruler or a card cut to 6 in (15.25 cm). Stand it on the table next to each post and in the middle. If the middle is low, add tension.

Ping pong net rules during play
- A serve that touches the net and lands in on the other side: let, replay the serve with no point. Every case is in let in table tennis.
- A ball that clips the net during a rally and lands on the other side: good, play on.
- A ball that goes around the post, not over the net, and lands on the opponent's side: good. Because the posts stick out 6 in, you can legally return "around the net".
- Touching the net assembly with your paddle, body or clothing during a rally: point to your opponent.
The rest of the rules are in table tennis rules.
Caring for the net
- Take the net off or loosen it when the table sits unused for a long time. The cord and fabric stretch out under constant tension.
- Do not leave the net outdoors. Sun and rain ruin the fabric and rust the springs.
- Store the clamps with nothing heavy on top, so they do not bend.
- Replace the net when it no longer holds 6 in in the middle even at full tension.
Frequently asked questions
How high is a ping pong net?
6 in (15.25 cm) above the table surface, along its whole length, including the middle.
How long is a ping pong net?
About 6 ft (1.83 m), because the posts sit 6 in outside each side of a 5 ft wide table.
Are retractable ping pong nets any good?
They are great for travel and for different tables. For a table that stays put, a screw clamp is firmer and holds the height better.
What happens if a serve hits the net?
If it then lands on the opponent's side, it is a let and you serve again. If it lands out or on your own side, your opponent wins the point.
Can you touch the net in ping pong?
Not during a rally. Touching the net assembly with your paddle, body or clothing gives the point to your opponent.
