Official table tennis table dimensions (plus net and ball size)

Updated on · 5 min read

An official table tennis table is 2.74 m long, 1.525 m wide and 76 cm high, about 9 ft by 5 ft and 30 in tall. The net is 15.25 cm (6 in) high, with posts 15.25 cm outside the table. The ball is 40 mm across and weighs 2.7 g.

Official table tennis table dimensions are the same everywhere, from a rec center to the Olympic Games. They are written into the ITTF rules, and they are what makes a ping pong table "regulation size" when you shop for one.

Here are all the official measurements for the table, the net and the ball, what each one means in practice, and a guide to how much clearance you need for a ping pong table at home.

A few details the rules make clear:

  • The playing surface can be any material, as long as the ball bounces evenly (see the bounce test below).
  • The lines are part of the table. A ball that lands on a white line is in.
  • The vertical sides of the tabletop are not part of the playing surface. That is why an edge ball counts and a side ball does not. See edge ball vs side ball.
  • The center line splits each half for doubles serves and only matters there. It counts as part of the right half-court.

Blue and dark green are the most common colors, but the rule only requires a dark, even, matte surface so the white or orange ball stands out.

Net dimensions

Net height15.25 cm (6 in) along its whole length
Post height15.25 cm (6 in)
Posts outside the side line15.25 cm (6 in)
Total net length1.83 m (6 ft): the table width plus 15.25 cm on each side

The net assembly includes the net, the cord that holds it, the posts and the clamps. The bottom of the net should sit as close to the table as possible, and its ends are attached to the posts from top to bottom. During a rally, touching any part of it gives your opponent the point.

Because the posts stick out past the table, you can legally hit a return around the net post, without going over the net, as long as it lands on the other side.

The bounce test

The rules also define how the table should play: an official ball dropped from 30 cm (about 12 in) must bounce back about 23 cm (about 9 in). Thin or poorly supported tops bounce lower and unevenly, especially near the edges. That is the main difference between a cheap recreational table and a competition table.

Ball size

ItemOfficial size
Diameter40 mm (about 1.57 in)
Weight2.7 g
Materialplastic
Colorwhite or orange, matte

The 40 mm ball replaced the old 38 mm ball in 2000, and celluloid balls were replaced by plastic ones in 2014. In tournaments, only ITTF-approved ball models are allowed.

How much space do you need for a ping pong table?

For international competition, the ITTF requires a playing area of at least 14 m by 7 m (about 46 ft by 23 ft), with 5 m of height. Nobody needs that at home, but it shows that the table alone is not enough: you play from behind the end line, not pressed against it.

A practical guide for recreational play:

  • behind each end: the more the better; with less than about 5 ft (1.5 m), play feels cramped;
  • on each side: around 3 ft (1 m) so you can move;
  • ceiling: high enough for lobs without hitting it.

In a tight space, keeping rallies close to the table works fine. For buying tips, see how to choose a ping pong table.

Mini tables and non-standard sizes

Smaller tables are popular for kids and small rooms. They are great for fun and for practicing control, but they are not regulation size. If you are training for tournaments, use a full-size table, because the distance and height change your reaction time and the angles of the ball.
