How to assemble a ping pong table

Updated on · 5 min read

To assemble a ping pong table, sort the parts and tools, build the base with its wheels first, attach the two halves to the folding arms and only fully tighten everything at the end. Then level the legs, test the safety latches and set the net to 6 in (15.25 cm). Do it with two people: the halves are big and heavy.

Most ping pong tables arrive in boxes, unassembled. Putting one together is not hard, but it is long, and there are a few spots where a small mistake turns into a table that wobbles, sits crooked or has one half higher than the other.

This guide shows how to assemble a foldable ping pong table, the most common type, with the tips manuals tend to leave out. Every model has its own manual, and the manual always comes first: use this as a companion.

Before you start

How to assemble a ping pong table in 4 steps: base and wheels, the two halves, leveling the legs and fitting the net
The order of assembly for a folding table
  • Get a helper. Each half of the top is large and heavy. Doing it alone is the easiest way to chip the table or hurt yourself.
  • Assemble it near where it will live. An assembled table may not fit through a doorway, especially one with a fixed base.
  • Protect the floor and the top. Use the cardboard from the box as a mat, and always lay the top playing side up or on something soft.
  • Sort the parts and hardware by type and check them against the manual's list. It is much easier to find a missing bolt now than halfway through.
  • Set aside time. Plan on a few hours the first time.

Step by step

  1. Build the base: join the undercarriage pieces, attach the legs and fit the wheels. Leave the bolts snug, not fully tight.
  2. Install the folding arms and safety latches on the base, checking the manual for the correct side of each part.
  3. With your helper, carefully turn each half of the top and attach any brackets underneath that your model needs.
  4. Mount the two halves on the folding arms, one at a time, with the specified bolts.
  5. Open the table into play position, check that the halves line up, and only then tighten every bolt.
  6. Level the table: put a spirit level on both halves and adjust the leveling feet until they match.
  7. Test the latches: fold and unfold the table a few times and make sure each half locks upright.
  8. Fit the net at the center of the table and adjust its height and tension.

The most common mistake: tightening too early

If you fully tighten each bolt as you go, parts lock in slightly the wrong position and the last hole will not line up. Keep everything snug until the frame is complete, then tighten in a crisscross pattern, the way you would tighten a car wheel.

Another tip: with screws that go straight into the wooden top, do not force them. Particleboard strips easily, and a stripped hole never holds well again.

How to level the table

An unlevel table makes the ball roll to one side and gives each half a different bounce.

  1. Put the spirit level along the length and width of each half.
  2. Adjust the leveling feet until the bubble is centered.
  3. Check the middle seam: run your hand across the joint. There should be no step.
  4. Measure the height at all four corners: 30 in (76 cm) from floor to surface.

If the floor is very uneven, move the table before trying to fix everything with the feet.

How to set up a ping pong table net

  1. Clamp the posts at the middle of the table, one on each side, lined up with the seam.
  2. Tighten the clamps without forcing them, so they do not dent the edge.
  3. Stretch the net and tie or hook the cord to the posts.
  4. Adjust the tension until the net is 6 in (15.25 cm) high along its whole length, including the middle.
  5. Make sure the bottom of the net sits as close to the table as possible.

Clamp types and official sizes are in ping pong net.

Checklist after assembly

  • the table does not wobble when you lean on it;
  • both halves are level, with no step at the seam;
  • the latches hold each half upright;
  • the wheels lock;
  • the net is 6 in high all the way across;
  • the ball bounces the same at the corners and in the middle.

If the table is going into a tight room, check how much space you need first. If you have not bought yours yet, see how foldable tables work.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to assemble a ping pong table?

It depends on the model, but plan on a few hours the first time, with two people.

Can one person assemble a ping pong table?

It is not recommended. The halves are large and heavy, and it is easy to chip the table or get hurt.

Why is one half of my table higher than the other?

Usually bolts tightened too early or an uneven floor. Loosen them, line up the halves and adjust the leveling feet.

How do you set up a ping pong table net?

Clamp the posts at the middle of each side, stretch the net and adjust the tension until it is 6 in high along its whole length.

How high should a ping pong table be once assembled?

30 in (76 cm) from the floor to the playing surface.
