For more than two decades, Timo Boll was the biggest name in European table tennis and one of the few players who could regularly beat the Chinese. Left-handed, technical and known for his class on and off the table, he became a hero in Germany and was hugely respected in China too.
This page sums up Timo Boll's career, his main titles, his playing style and his farewell in 2025.
Who is Timo Boll
Timo Boll was born on March 8, 1981, in Erbach im Odenwald, in the German state of Hesse. He is left-handed and plays with the shakehand grip. He started young, stood out as a junior and was playing for Germany's national team at a very early age.
In January 2003 he became the first German to reach world No. 1. He briefly returned to the top in 2011 and again in March 2018, at age 37.

The act of fair play
One of the most remembered moments of Boll's career was not a win. At the 2005 World Championships in Shanghai, he was playing China's Liu Guozheng and had match point in the deciding game. His opponent's ball grazed the edge of the table, something not everyone noticed. Boll told the umpire, the point went to his rival and he went on to lose the match. The gesture earned him an international fair play award and became a classic example of sportsmanship. The edge ball rule is explained in edge ball vs side ball.
Playing style
Boll is considered one of the first great two-winged loopers, attacking with topspin off both forehand and backhand. His main strengths:
- A precise forehand loop with lots of spin variation.
- A fast backhand, able to attack and to play spinny blocks.
- Game reading and control, more than raw power.
- Varied lefty serves that create awkward angles.
Right-handed opponents had to keep adjusting against him. Tips for that kind of match are in how to play against a lefty.
Olympics and flag bearer
At the Olympics, Boll won four team medals: silver at Beijing 2008, bronze at London 2012, bronze at Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020. At Rio 2016 he was Germany's flag bearer at the opening ceremony, a rare honor for a table tennis player.
Borussia Düsseldorf and the farewell
Boll played for Borussia Düsseldorf from 2007 and won many German league and Champions League titles with the club. The German Bundesliga is one of the strongest leagues in the world, as explained in professional table tennis leagues.
In 2024 he announced that Paris 2024 would be his last international event. He stayed one more season with his club and played his last match on June 15, 2025, in the German league final in Frankfurt. Düsseldorf lost 3-2 to Ochsenhausen, in a final where Boll faced Brazil's Hugo Calderano. Before the match, the crowd gave him a standing ovation that lasted several minutes.
