Table tennis shoes and clothing
Good table tennis shoes are light, with a thin, flat, grippy rubber sole and solid side support for short, quick moves. Running shoes are not ideal because the high, soft sole makes your feet unstable. For clothing, wear a light shirt and shorts; in tournaments, the main color must be clearly different from the ball.
In this article
In table tennis you hardly ever run long distances, but you change direction constantly: short side steps, hip turns, lunges for short balls. The right shoes make those moves quick and safe. The wrong ones slow you down and raise the risk of rolling an ankle.
This guide covers what to look for in table tennis shoes and clothing, for practice and for competition.
What good table tennis shoes need
| Feature | Why |
|---|---|
| Thin, flat rubber sole | Keeps your foot close to the floor and stable when changing direction |
| Good grip | Stops you slipping on gym floors |
| Side support | Holds your foot during lateral moves |
| Light weight | Makes quick, short steps easier |
| Moderate cushioning | Comfort without making the foot "float" |
| Non-marking sole | Many gyms require soles that do not mark the floor |
Why running shoes are a poor choice
Running shoes are built for forward motion, with a high, soft heel. In table tennis that lifts your foot and makes it unstable on lateral moves. Running soles also tend to slip on court floors.
Table tennis shoes vs volleyball shoes
If you cannot find shoes made for table tennis, indoor court shoes usually work well: volleyball, badminton, squash and handball shoes all have grippy rubber soles and support for side-to-side movement. Volleyball shoes are sometimes a bit higher and more cushioned, but they are a solid substitute.
Choosing size and model
- Try them on late in the day, when your feet are slightly swollen.
- Wear your playing socks when you try them.
- Do side shuffles in the store. Your foot should not slide inside the shoe.
- Leave a little room at the toe, about a finger's width.
- Think about your floor. On wood or sports flooring, a light gum rubber sole usually grips best.
Socks
Athletic socks with padding at the sole and heel help prevent blisters. Pick fabrics that wick moisture. Very thin socks let your foot slide inside the shoe.
What to wear for table tennis
For practice, comfort and freedom of movement matter most:
- Shirt: light, quick-drying, with sleeves that do not restrict your shoulder.
- Shorts or skirt: nothing that limits squatting or wide steps.
- Warm-up jacket and pants: for warming up and between matches so you do not cool down.
- Small towel for sweat.
Table tennis clothing rules in competition
In international competition, the ITTF sets the basic outfit:
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Pieces | Short-sleeved or sleeveless shirt, shorts or skirt (or a one-piece sports outfit), socks and playing shoes |
| Main color | Clearly different from the color of the ball in use |
| Tracksuit | Only worn during play with the referee's permission |
| Opponents | In team events or doubles between different countries, colors must be distinguishable |
Local leagues and tournaments can set their own rules, such as requiring a club shirt. When in doubt, check the event rules.
The rules also say when you can use your towel: after every 6 points from the start of each game and at the change of ends in the deciding game. Read more in table tennis rules.
Caring for your shoes
- Wear your court shoes only on court. Street use brings in dirt and wears down the sole.
- Wipe the sole with a damp cloth if it starts slipping.
- Replace them when the sole goes smooth or the side support gives out.
Good shoes go hand in hand with good table tennis footwork. And before any session, do a proper warm-up to prepare your ankles and knees.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best shoes for table tennis?
Light shoes with a thin, flat, grippy rubber sole and good side support. Indoor court shoes work too.
Can I play table tennis in running shoes?
You can, but it is not ideal. The high, soft sole is unstable on lateral moves and can slip on court floors.
Are volleyball shoes good for table tennis?
Yes. They have grippy soles and lateral support; they are just usually a bit higher and more cushioned.
What should I wear to play table tennis?
A light shirt and shorts or a skirt that let you move freely. In tournaments, the main color must be clearly different from the ball.
Can I wear a white shirt for table tennis?
It depends on the event and the ball. The rule asks that your main clothing color be clearly different from the ball, so mostly white shirts are usually avoided when a white ball is used.
