The big stories

Fan Zhendong completes the set

Fan Zhendong arrived in Paris with world and World Cup titles but no Olympic singles gold: in Tokyo he had lost the final to Ma Long. In Paris he beat Sweden's Truls Möregårdh in the final to complete table tennis's informal "Grand Slam" of Olympic, world and World Cup titles. He also won team gold.

Möregårdh and Sweden are back

The Swede, known for his creative, unpredictable style, knocked out then world No. 1 Wang Chuqin early in the draw. He then led Sweden to the team final. Two silvers brought back memories of Sweden's golden era in the 1990s.

Félix Lebrun and French fever

At 17, Félix Lebrun won singles bronze in front of a home crowd, beating Hugo Calderano 4-0 in the bronze medal match, then added team bronze with his brother Alexis and Simon Gauzy. His fast penhold game made headlines worldwide.

Chen Meng repeats, Ma Long reaches six golds

Chen Meng repeated her Tokyo win, beating teammate Sun Yingsha in the women's final. In the men's team event, Ma Long won his sixth Olympic gold, the most by any Chinese Olympian in any sport. For the reasons behind China's dominance, see why China dominates table tennis.

Mixed doubles: North Korea's surprise

Favorites Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha took gold as expected. The surprise was silver for North Korea's Ri Jong-sik and Kim Kum-yong, who had barely played on the international circuit before the Games.

The Americas at Paris 2024

Brazil's Hugo Calderano had the best Olympic table tennis run ever by a player from the Americas. He reached the men's singles semifinals, lost 4-2 to Möregårdh after a series of tight games and then lost the bronze match to Félix Lebrun, finishing fourth. A year later he won the World Cup and took silver at the World Championships. His story is in Hugo Calderano.

For Team USA, the next big chance is at home: the US will have host spots at LA 2028, where the program changes to include doubles and a mixed team event.

How the competition worked

All singles events were knockouts with best-of-7 matches, and the team events started in the round of 16, with ties that open with a doubles match. Each country could enter at most two players per singles event. The Olympic format is explained in table tennis at the Olympics.
