Table Tennis World Cup: how it works and who has won
The Table Tennis World Cup is an ITTF singles event held since 1980 for men and since 1996 for women. Since 2024, in Macao, it has 48 players per draw split into 16 groups of three, and only the group winners advance to a knockout. Brazil's Hugo Calderano won in 2025, the first winner from the Americas.

The name can mislead soccer fans: the Table Tennis World Cup is not a tournament between national teams. It is an individual singles event with a small, very strong field. In 2025 it also produced one of the biggest upsets of the decade, when Brazil's Hugo Calderano took the title.
Here is how the World Cup works today, who gets in and who has won it recently.
What is the Table Tennis World Cup?
It is a yearly ITTF event that brings together the best players from every continent. The men's World Cup started in 1980 and the women's in 1996. For decades it had only 16 to 20 players and worked as a meeting of continental champions with the top of the ranking.
Between 2021 and 2023 the singles World Cup was off the calendar while WTT launched its own season-ending event, the WTT Finals. It returned in 2024 in Macao with a bigger format, and Macao also hosted the 2025 and 2026 editions.
Who qualifies?
Since 2024, each draw has 48 players:
| Spot | How many |
|---|---|
| World champion | 1 |
| U19 world champion | 1 |
| Continental cups (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania) | up to 4 per continent |
| World ranking | the rest, up to 48 |
There is a cap on players per country so the draw is not filled by one nation. That makes the continental spots important for players from the Americas: the Pan American Cup is a direct route to the World Cup.
How the format works
- The 48 players are split into 16 groups of 3, seeded by ranking.
- Everyone in a group plays everyone else.
- Only the group winner advances.
- The 16 winners play a knockout from the round of 16, with best-of-7 matches.
- There is no bronze match: both losing semifinalists get bronze.
The groups of three are what scare the favorites: one loss can be fatal, because only first place goes through. That makes the opening days full of surprises. For more on groups and knockouts, see table tennis tournament formats.

The Mixed Team World Cup
The ITTF also runs the Mixed Team World Cup, played since 2023 in Chengdu, China. National teams of men and women meet in a format of their own, where doubles and singles games add up across the tie. Mixed team play has caught on, and a mixed team event joins the Olympics at LA 2028.
