How to choose a ping pong table

Updated on · 4 min read

Pick a ping pong table for its bounce, which depends on tabletop thickness: 5/8 to 3/4 inch (15 to 19 mm) is fine for casual play, 1 inch (25 mm) is the tournament standard. Decide indoor or outdoor, go with full size (9 x 5 ft, 30 in high) and leave about 6.5 ft (2 m) behind each end.

A good ping pong table lasts for years and completely changes how the game feels. A bad one has a low, uneven bounce that ruins even your best shots. Before you buy, it helps to know what separates one table from another, because the product photo never shows what matters.

Official ping pong table dimensions

A full-size table under ITTF rules has:

MeasurementValue
Length2.74 m (9 ft)
Width1.525 m (5 ft)
Height to the playing surface76 cm (2.5 ft)
Net height15.25 cm (6 in)
Side lines and end linesWhite, 2 cm (3/4 in) wide
Center line (for doubles)White, 3 mm (1/8 in)
SurfaceDark, uniform and matte

The rules also say a standard ball dropped from 30 cm (about 12 in) should bounce uniformly about 23 cm (9 in). That bounce is what separates a good table from a bad one. Details in table tennis table dimensions.

What matters most: the tabletop

The bounce depends mostly on the top's thickness and density.

Top thicknessBounceBest for
12 to 15 mm (about 1/2 in)Low and uneven, with "dead spots"Occasional fun
16 to 19 mm (5/8 to 3/4 in)Fair to goodRegular home play
22 to 25 mm (7/8 to 1 in)Good to very goodSerious practice and clubs
25 mm (1 in)Tournament standardClubs and competition

To test, drop a ball from about 30 cm (12 in) at several spots, including near the edges and the middle. If it bounces much lower anywhere, the top is thin or poorly supported.

Indoor vs outdoor ping pong table

An indoor table left on a porch or in a damp garage warps quickly. If it will be exposed at all, even under cover, get an outdoor table.

Folding, stationary or compact

  • Folding with wheels: both halves fold up so the table stands upright for storage. Most home tables work this way. Check that the wheels lock.
  • Playback mode: with one half folded up, you can practice alone as the ball bounces back. See how to practice table tennis alone.
  • Stationary: common in clubs and public parks. Steadier, but it stays put.
  • Compact or mini: smaller than full size. Fine for kids and small rooms, but it changes the game.

How much space do you need?

Suggested space around a ping pong table: 2 m behind each end and 1 m on each side
For comfortable home play, about 6.7 x 3.5 m (22 x 12 ft)

The table alone takes 9 x 5 ft, but nobody plays pressed against it. A comfortable casual area has about 2 m (6.5 ft) behind each end and 1 m (3 ft) on each side, for roughly 6.7 x 3.5 m (22 x 12 ft). You can play in less, but you will hit walls on deeper shots. Official competitions use a much larger area, at least 14 x 7 m (46 x 23 ft).

Also think about ceiling height (for lobs), lighting (no glare in your eyes) and flooring (nothing slippery).

Other details that matter

  • Frame and legs: thicker legs and solid cross braces stop the table from wobbling. Adjustable feet help on uneven floors.
  • Edges: protected corners resist chips.
  • Net: look for a post set with adjustable height and tension. The net should be 6 in (15.25 cm) high along its whole length.
  • Assembly: many tables ship unassembled. Plan time and two people.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a regulation ping pong table?

9 ft long, 5 ft wide and 30 in high (2.74 x 1.525 m, 76 cm), with a 6 in (15.25 cm) net.

What is the best tabletop thickness for a ping pong table?

For casual play, 5/8 to 3/4 in (16 to 19 mm) bounces reasonably well. For serious practice, 7/8 to 1 in (22 to 25 mm). Tournaments use 1 in (25 mm).

Can I leave a ping pong table outside?

Only if it is an outdoor table. Indoor wooden tables warp with moisture and sun.

How much space do you need for a ping pong table?

For comfortable play, about 22 x 12 ft (6.7 x 3.5 m): the table plus about 6.5 ft behind each end and 3 ft on each side.

Are folding ping pong tables good?

Yes, as long as the top is thick enough and the wheels lock. They are the most practical choice for a home.
