Claudio Kano (Cláudio in Portuguese) was one of the first Brazilian table tennis players to earn respect outside his country. In the 1980s and 1990s, when Brazil was still looking for its place in international table tennis, he piled up Pan American Games medals and played at two Olympics. With Hugo Hoyama he formed the most successful doubles pair in the Americas at the time.

This page covers Claudio Kano's career, the medals he won and why his name still matters to people who follow ping pong in Brazil.

Key moments in Claudio Kano's career

Who was Claudio Kano

Claudio Kano was born on December 18, 1965, in São Paulo. He started playing as a child at Showa, a club linked to the Japanese-Brazilian community in the south of the city. Clubs like this one played a huge role in spreading the sport in Brazil, as explained in table tennis in Brazil.

He later trained at Hebraica and in São Bernardo do Campo, a city near São Paulo that became one of the main table tennis hubs in the country. That is where his path crossed with Hugo Hoyama, a few years younger, with whom he would share the national team for almost a decade.

His Pan American Games medals

The Pan Am Games were Kano's main stage. He played four editions and came home with medals from every one:

GamesResults
Caracas 1983Gold in doubles and team, bronze in mixed doubles
Indianapolis 1987Team gold, doubles silver, singles bronze
Havana 1991Gold in doubles and team, singles silver
Mar del Plata 1995Gold in doubles and team, singles silver

That adds up to 12 medals: 7 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze. For many years it was the Brazilian record in Pan Am table tennis. Hugo Hoyama only passed it at the 2007 Games in Rio de Janeiro. More about the event is in table tennis at the Pan American Games.

The doubles pair with Hugo Hoyama

Kano and Hoyama won men's doubles gold together in Havana 1991 and Mar del Plata 1995, on top of the team titles. They complemented each other: two players who grew up in the same table tennis scene, with years of training side by side.

If you want to know why doubles is almost a different sport, read table tennis doubles rules, which explains the alternating hits and the serve and return rotation.

Olympics and world results

Kano represented Brazil at two Olympics:

  • Seoul 1988, the first Games with table tennis on the Olympic program.
  • Barcelona 1992.

At both he went out in the early rounds, which was normal for South American players then, who faced Asian and European rivals with far bigger programs behind them. Still, he had good results beyond the continent: he reached the round of 16 at the 1987 World Championships in New Delhi and finished sixth at the World Cup in 1987 and 1989. He also won several Latin American singles titles in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

His death before Atlanta

Kano had qualified for the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, which would have been his third Games. On July 1, 1996, weeks before the opening ceremony, he died in a motorcycle accident in São Paulo, at age 30. The news shook Brazilian table tennis, which lost one of its best players at the peak of his experience.

Claudio Kano's legacy

Kano was part of the generation that showed Brazil could lead table tennis in the Americas. The medals he and Hoyama won in the 1980s and 1990s built a tradition that carried on through later generations, all the way to Hugo Calderano. To meet the other names in that story, see Brazilian table tennis players to know and the page on Hugo Hoyama.

His story is also a good example of how the sport grew in Brazil through immigrant clubs, schools and associations, long before live streams or a professional tour existed.
